For anyone who has a terrarium, they know there are endless possibilities with the options of plants. Whether it is for a dart frog, or for growing out your favorite plant species; there generally is about more than half of the space left in your terrarium to fill up with complimentary plants. Some people who have dart frogs don’t even know what their options are when it comes to decorating their mini piece of the jungle. Others are avid plant collectors and chose to add frogs to their tanks just to accent their $200 plant cutting they are trying to grow out but for all, there is always room in your terrarium for a miniature orchid.
Miniature orchids are some of the most bizarre yet beautiful plants known to man. From a few feet away some only look like a little splash of color amongst a green background but at a closer glance there is so much texture and detail amongst the petals and frills of these amazing plants.
One of my most favorite and one of the largest genera of mini orchid species, are the Pleurothallis sp. This Genus of orchid has such a wide range of diversity.
Here is a great Genus that is closely related to Pleurothallis.
Barbosella; these awesome little jewels are a great species for the terrarium and have similar care requirements to Pleurothallis.
Genus: Barbosella Species: species (Ecuador) Origin: Ecuadorvery similar to Barb. cucullata with a clumping growth habit of 3″ upright paddle-like leaves, flushes of 3-1/2″ upright single flowered spikes carry 1″ long narrow reddish blooms.
Another awesome Genus of orchids that has a few mini species as well as very odd species, that are great for the dart frog terrarium is Bulbophyllum and Cirrhopetalum.
Cirrhopetalum was once considered Bulbophyllum and under some species is stall labeled as both under its Latin name and classification. The name Cirrhopetalum (pronounced: Sirr-oh-pet=alum) has recently broken off into it’s own genus because of the clear distinction amongst the blooms. These guys are awesome for mounting on the background and having their colorful and totally bizarre flowers cascading down into a great focal point for the center of the terrarium.
Genus: Bulbophyllum Species: catenulatum (red/yellow) Origin: Philippines
Genus: Cirrhopetalum (Bulbophyllum) Species: andersonii Origin: Vietnama beautiful miniature from Vietnam

These are just a few of the amazing plants you can keep in your terrarium. One of my personal favorite companies, which has one of the largest selection of plants around, is Andy’s Orchids. Located in Sunny Encinitas, California. These guys have one of the best selections around.
